  • Don Juan

  • This attractive Web site explores the trajectory across Europe of the 17th century literary figure, Don Juan. The story of this unrepentant seducer and agent provocateur originated in Spain in 1630 and was then rewritten by different playwrights across Europe, with each version manifesting the cultural aspects of the playwright's nationality. This site traces the development of Don Juan from Golden Age Spain, to Baroque Italy, to classical France of Louis XIV, to England at the time of the Restoration of the monarchy. Each country is first explored in terms of political situation, religion and theatre to provide a frame of reference for the work (the user should note that there are some factual errors regarding dates). Then, the various versions of Don Juan (such as Tirso de Molina's 'El burlador de Sevilla' or 'Il convitato di pietra' from Italy) are explored in more detail, demonstrating how the recurrent themes (the condition of women, humour, honour, medicine, licentiousness, blasphemy) reveal the characteristic traits of the society of each country. While the site is divided into sections related to each country, points of commonality between countries are highlighted and the user may cross-reference by following colour-coded links. Synopses of the different versions of Don Juan are available, together with biographies of their authors. The full-text of some of these versions ('Dom Juan' by Molière and 'The Libertine' by Thomas Shadwell, for example) are available on the site as zipped files.Illustrated throughout, this Web resource will be of great interest to students and researchers of the story of Don Juan.
  • ELazarillo.net

  • The Web site, Elazarillo.net, is dedicated to the classic 16th century Spanish text, 'La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes', focusing predominantly on making the case for naming the author of this so-called anonymous text. Th author is identified as Alfonso de Valdés by Rosa Navarro, a professor of Spanish literature and Golden Age specialist from the University of Barcelona, whose justifications may be read on the site. The site also contains a number of useful resources, such as full articles on the text that have appeared in the Spanish press and journals, together with information about and extracts from recent publications in the field.
  • Lazarillo de Tormes

  • A gateway to online resources useful for the study of the Spanish Golden Age picaresque novel, 'La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, y de sus fortunas y adversidades'. Users may read here an introduction to the picaresque, which outlines its salient features and compares them to the text of Lazarillo, and then access a full-text digital version of famous novel itself. Links to complementary resources are also provided and comprise: Juan Ramón de Arana's pages on Lazarillo, which summarize the characteristics of the picaresque and the pícaro, allow students to text their knowledge of the text online, and explore the supposed anonymity of the text's author; a site offering a brief textual analysis; historical information about Salamanca's Roman bridge (which spans the River Tormes); and a study guide to Lazarillo prepared by the gateway's compiler, Harry Vélez Quiñones, which offers introductory notes and comprehension questions for each section. All in all, this is a good resource that will permit a deeper engagement with this widely-studied text..

Available to download from the site are electronic versions of a selection of plays by Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca, and Ruiz de Alarcón. The user should note that this anthology does not necessarily contain some of these writers' most famous works. The site also provides summaries of the articles within the printed journal, El Criticón: the user may browse these summaries by contributor. Book reviews of new publications related to the field are provided, as is a diary of relevant seminars and conferences (this section was in need of updating at the time of cataloguing). The site's authors are interested in the use of technology in literary research, and offer descriptions and analyses of some of the tools available such as Radix X and Brocense, which is especially useful for the analysis of plays. • The characters and plots of Tirso's Comedias

The site's List of Characters provides first and last name, title and category. Chittenden also wrote plot summaries for the 61 authentic works by Tirso, which are also available here, together with links to the full-text versions from the Comedia Web site. Stroud's adaptation takes full advantage of the possibilities offered by digital resources, permitting fast and easy cross-referencing between characters and names, the plays in which they appear, plot summaries, and character categories or status. The database uses abbreviations and codes for the plays and categories, a list of which is available here.Together with a lengthy and informative introduction by Professor Chittenden, this is a useful tool for the study of the names of Tirso's characters, which will offer insights into the nature of the characters themselves and the roles they play. There are also a number of longer features. At the time of writing, the user could access: a study of the uses of 'que' and 'de que'; an essay by Noam Chomsky on the word as a political force within the USA: a summary of Cervantes's life and works; and an electronic version of 'La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes'. • Spanish grammar exercises

    • This excellent Web site offers a wide variety of Spanish grammar exercises for students at an intermediate level. The site focuses on those areas of grammar that cause particular difficulty, and the exercises, completed online with instant correction and feedback, aim to consolidate proficiency and understanding. The user should note that there are very few grammar explanations on the site: for some areas, a short summary with an example will remind the user of the grammar rule in question. A number of 'study modules' open up specific areas by means of contextualized grammar activities. For example, a description of the running of the bulls in San Fermín presents uses of the preterite and the imperfect; a poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez practises the future tense. Many of these modules feature audio and video material for which the user needs QuickTime Player. The activities on this site are ideal for independent study, or for supervised use in the classroom. Clarity of presentation and the fun element that results from the use of multimedia make this site a recommended resource for Spanish language students and teachers.
