  • La chanson de geste

  • This Web site offers a detailed introduction to the chanson de geste, the genre of epic narrative poetry from medieval France. The site clearly defines the genre, summaries its origins (written from the 11th to the 13th century), and outlines the transition of the 'chanson' from oral narrative (sung by jongleurs) to written text. The site lists what it claims to be 'all' the known chansons de geste (in alphabetical order), providing additional information (on where the manuscript is held, publication details of different editions, and so on) where possible. The oldest chanson, 'La chanson de Roland', is explored in much greater detail, with history and some textual analysis. A huge bibliography of primary and secondary material related to the chansons de gestre is available, as is a useful glossary of vocabulary common to this epic narrative. The site also elucidates on the grouping, in later centuries, of the chansons into 'cycles'.
  • Early modern French women writers

  • Coverage begins at the start of the fifteenth century and ends with the dawn of the eighteenth century, discussing ten or so writers. Among those featured and afforded biographies are the following: Christine de Pisan; Marguerite de Navarre; Diane de Poitiers; Anne (Ninon) de Lenclos; and Marie Le Jars de Gournay. There are plans expressed elsewhere to increase this to about 20, and a list of writers under consideration includes: Anne de Marquets; Anne du Noyer; Madame de LaFayette; and Henriette-Julie de Castelnau Murat. Texts were selected to be representative of women's writing of the early modern period, and to present texts not readily available to the general reader. Primary texts are featured on the site, and where these are not available external links are provided. An excellent site for those interested in women's studies, early modern history, and French history and literature.

  • Le XIXe siècle électronique

  • The website, 'Le XIXe siècle électronique' is a gateway to electronic resources useful for the study of 19th century French literature. The site's author, Andrew Oliver, has compiled and offered brief evaluations for a selection of sites related to: Balzac; Stendhal; Hugo; Flaubert; Baudelaire; Rimbaud; Zola; and Henri Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, Madame de Charrière and Madame de Staël. The types of resources listed by Oliver include search engines, electronic journals (and sites where the user may find scholarly research), exhibitions, and sites devoted to individual authors. Oliver offers a critical perspective throughout, and a perceptive overview of the electronic resources available for research into this field. This site acts as a good starting point for anyone wishing to use the Internet more in their work on French literature.
  • Roland Barthes au Collège de France

  • This Web site is devoted to the French literary critic and theorist, Roland Barthes. It offers general resources to all Internet users, and extensive material related to Barthes's seminars at the Collège de France from 1976 to 1980 for subscribing users. Barthes held the Chair of Literary Semiotics at the Collège. All users may freely access a lengthy biography of Barthes, which details the development of his thought, and a full biography of all his works. Samples of the seminars are also available to all: here, users may read extracts from the sessions, and view images of manuscripts of notes made by Barthes. For each extract, the key Barthesian concepts to which it refers are listed (a full list of these concepts is available elsewhere on the site). Subscribers may access search and browse facilities for all the seminars and also listen to the original recording of each session. The site provides an email address through which information about subscription may be attained. This site represents a valuable tool for research into Barthes's work and thought: the free access mode offers students beginning work on Barthes some useful introductory information. Researchers are advised to contact the site in order to take full advantage of the archive and the specially developed research tools offered.
