YIVO
Institute for Jewish Research
The homepage for the YIVO Institute
for Jewish Research holds information about the history of the institution,
its libraries and publications, and programmes for scholars and the public.
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research was established in 1925 in Vilna
as the Yiddish Scientific Institute, an academic institution devoted to
the study of Yiddish and East European Jewish culture. The Institute relocated
its headquarters to New York soon after the outbreak of the Second World
War, and is now based at the Centre for Jewish History. It holds the world's
largest collection of materials relating to the history of East European
Jewry. In particular, it retains Yiddish as a language of business, and
has been instrumental in preserving the survival of the language with numerous
courses and seminars. The Institute's biannual newsletter "Yedies" is available
in both Yiddish and English on the site (requiring Adobe Acrobat). The
library and archive contain the largest collection of material concerning
the the culture of Eastern European and American Jewry, including 25,000
rabbinical works dating from as early as the 16th century, original communal
registers and documents from Poland, Russia, Lithuania, and Germany, from
the 17th century onwards, documents from the Warsaw, Lodz, and Vilna Ghettos
and thousands of handwritten eyewitness accounts by Holocaust survivors,
as well as the world's most extensive Yiddish music and theater collection.
The institution publishes extensively, including Uriel Weinreich's "College
Yiddish"
Modern
Hebrew project
This is the Web site for the
Modern Hebrew Project, from the University of Texas Linguistics Research
Centre. Since 1998 the project has been developing materials for the study
of Modern Hebrew language and linguistics. These materials include tutorials,
documents and various other Web-based tools. Users may access, for example,
the Hebrewer, a Web-based lexicon generator, as well as an Index of Articles
in Jewish Studies (known as RAMBI). This is a particularly valuable and
user-friendly bibliographic database, which is compiled from thousands
of periodicals and collections of articles predominantly from holdings
of the Jewish National and University Library. The articles may be in Hebrew,
Yiddish or other European languages.
Jewish
virtual library
The Web site "Jewish Virtual
Library" is maintained and compiled by the American-Israeli Cooperative
Enterprise (AICE) and this ought to be born in mind when using or looking
at the site. Obviously the site is dominated by literature on the Jewish
Holocaust, but there are also sections on Israeli politics, biography,
Israel and religion. One of the best sections of this Web site displays
reproductions and excerpts from Judaic treasures of the Library of Congress.
It features some beautiful reproductions along with explanations of the
works, textual excerpts and links to vocabularly and terminology that may
be unfamiliar.

The Academic Guide to Jewish
History web site is published by the University of Toronto Libraries, and
is the product of a collaborative effort by librarians from eleven research
institutions, including Princeton and Yale. The Guide was established to
provide a consolidated list of Jewish history resources, which are all
of an academic nature and have been carefully selected. The material listed
falls into several categories; information gateways, encyclopaedias and
biographies, libraries and archives, indexes and bibliographies, primary
documents and journals. The focus is on English-language material, although
major works in Hebrew, German, Russian and other languages are included

The
Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature (ITHL)
The Institute for the Translation
of Hebrew Literature (ITHL) was founded in 1962 with the aim of acquainting
foreign readers with the best of modern Hebrew literature. At first, translation
was indeed its main function but in recent years its scope has broadened
to such an extent that the Institute's name no longer reflects the true
scope of its activity. Among its goals: selection of Literary Works for
Translation, preparation and presentation of new translations of contemporary
Hebrew literature, Rights/Literary Agency, financial aid to publishers
who undertake to independently translate a work of Hebrew literature for
publication abroad, catalogues, publications.

texts, but also sections on archaeology, biblical history, and ancient

topics relevant to biblical study, and to articles discussing various theories
and methods of biblical interpretation. Each index heading takes the user
to a page of annotated links, mostly to external articles and materials.
Martin
Buber Seiten
This internet resource provides
German language information pertaining to the life and work of the Jewish
theologian, philosopher, bible translator, and proponent of the chassidic
tradition (a Judaic religious movement), Martin Buber (1878-1965). An abridged
version of the site is available in English. The main attraction of the
site is the sizeable collection of electronic secondary texts relating
to the work of Buber. Equally useful is the section on Buber's life and
work, which consists of an informative overview of his works and main intellectual
pursuits and achievements. Also available here is an extensive range of
excerpts from Buber's works - a greater number of these are available in
the German language version of the site than in the English.
